Sømod Bolcher

Lately I’ve been eating breakfast, lunch, dinner and hard candies from Sømod Bolcher in Copenhagen. Hands down, this is the only place for genuine amazing hard candy in the city of Copenhagen. Don’t go to those other places. No! You will slap yourself a thousand times in the face if you’ve been buying your candy from anywhere else once you taste these goodies. So, honeys, get this: don’t buys that drink and don’t spend money on that dress if you’ve never tasted the wonder that is Sømod Bolcher.

Former parking lot - now just lot of fun!

Once upon a time this right here was a desolate parking lot right by Nansensgade in Copenhagen. Mysterious things happened here: people dealt all kinds of drugs and were all kinds of nasty. No more! They’ve lit up the place and it is now a free for all-kind of space where people kiss, eat food, play ball games, take their kids and generally climb stuff. Oh, how I love it! Reformation! Improvement!

Bankeråt

Walk downstairs the Danish café Bankeråt and you'll see the stuff that nightmares are made of (pictures below; they can't be described). I went here the other day to meet a friend who told me that not only is Bankeråt one amazing place because of the creepy vibe downstairs, but also because the staff apparently is great. Listen to this: once upon a time he had no address. A place to stay, yes, a place to stay, no. Get it? Anyway, because he had no address, he had no chance to get mail... what to do? Well, his apartment was right by Bankeråt, so he strolled down and asked if they could receive his mail for him. No prob, the good people at Bankeråt said, and for a while he went there every day for post and a cup of coffee. That's what I call good, bohemian times.

Pussy Galore's Flying Circus

Greetings, all. I am currently sitting in a hotel room with very, very sore feet and all I can think about is the cleansing shower I am soon to have. That's why I have decided to include the Danish cafe Pussy Galore's Flying Circus today; the name simply says it all, leaving me with my time to soak my feet. Enjoy!

Flottenheimer

Saturday morning my aunt took me to Cafe Flottenheimer. Fantastic! Brunch on a weekend morning has always been one of my favorite things. Flottenheimer is right at the heart of the city, but I have to warn you that the acoustics of the place could be better. I know they’re not running a music venue here, but unless I’m having a conversation with the most boring person on planet Earth, I’d like to hear what they’re saying. My advice: go here on a silent day or go here alone. Then there will be no complaints.

Dagmar Teatret

Oh, how I have always loved Dagmar Teatret, that magnificent Danish cinema. The atmosphere, the choice of films. Everything is just perfect in here. Ok, ok, so everything wasn't great when I worked here, but let's not dwell in the past, but be present now and, wow, this place is simply worth coming back to again and again. Also, they play the best films in Copenhagen. Mainstream and artsy, but always quality.

Cafe Retro

Yes! Cafe Retro is where you need to go if you’re in Copenhagen! It’s a lovely non-profit coffee shop that brings back memories of secret lofts (even if those never existed in the first place), but that’s not the reason people come back and back again. The reason for that is different, but how can I explain it properly…? I’ll try with this: imagine a party. It’s before the time where everyone is really drunk, but past being sober. It’s that moment where the things we say are still genuine and where embarrassment hasn’t become an integrated part of our being. We meet old friends and we remember their voices when they start to speak. We meet new people, and we recognize them as new friends. That’s why I love Café Retro; because it always feels like that. The light is dim, and when you enter that front door it suddenly feels like we are all in this together. No less.

On a sidenote; ever wondered how cool people are in Copenhagen? Take an always amazing streetstyle, a little bit of DJ'ing and all-together awesomeness and you get this guy who is the epitome of what young Copenhagen boys look like:

LoCal

Today I wanted a sandwich. I wanted chicken and I wanted herb mayo. Now. Enter LoCal, the very fancy sandwich joint on Lars Bjørn Stræde in the centre of Copenhagen. With a dangerously flirtatious boy behind the counter and sandwiches to die for, this is the place for all confident girls. And boys. Hey, boys can go here, too. I’m all for that. Also, I’m all for the sandwiches here because there are positively delish!

Kalaset

Monday afternoon I spent some time with my friend Oscar for an extravagant cup of hot chocolate with marshmallows, whipped cream and raspberry jam. Oscar has always been on the intellectual side, so of course he had sips of espresso. But no matter what you have at Kalaset, the Swedish-inspired café in Copenhagen, it’s sure to be good. It’s like being in an eerie living room owned by an old lady who likes to serve you very good drinks. It’s not creepy like Bankeråt (will have a section later, don’t worry) a couple of blocks down, so if you don’t want to have nightmares, choose this place.

Masken

I get forced in here a lot. A lot. I’ve been at the gay bar Masken about twenty times just because I have a friend in the city who loves that place  as much as she loves shots which is the reason she keeps dragging me back there. What can I say? I’m loyal. But somehow I always walk out of there with a smile on my face. And why is that, you may ask. I’ll tell you why. At Masken you always meet such freaks. And I’m not talking Twiggy Ramirez-freaks, I’m talking good old-fashioned weird people. I’ve had some strange, strange conversations in here (the Republican telling me that San Diego was a hippie hellhole and that guns is meant for SHOOTING is still my favorite) and encounters I would rather not haveAnyhow, what’s the conclusion to all of this? Masken is the place to go in Copenhagen if you want to have a really good laugh the next day, because sometimes it’s just not funny when it’s happening. But then again; the best of stories usually aren’t.

Street party at Studiestræde

Saturday morning I woke up, well-knowing that something great would be going on. First I had great breakfast and then I headed straight for Studiestræde, the one street in Copenhagen that I might love the most. I’d gotten the valuable information from a friend that there would be a street party here all day, and oh yes, there was. See, I used to work in one of the shops on the street, and every now and then there would be one of these parties. Music, beer and food all out there on the street. And I couldn’t go. I could only stand inside a travel bookstore while I desperately wanted to PAR-TAY. However, this Saturday I did venture out there. I might not have par-tayed, but I had a good time nonetheless.

As a matter of fact all I did was sit and talk with one of my lovely friends about Michael Haneke’s The White Ribbon (I think we were both in doubt of what to think) and the strange people we’d come across during the year. It was as we sat and drank coffee at a table in the middle of a street, that the party slowly started. Suddenly bad dance music was blaring from two speakers and people started to gather. It was lovely and reminded me, once again, why cities are the best way to pass any kinds of time.

Pride Parade

Me and my good friend Stine talked about joining this next year if we're both in Copenhagen at that time. Wouldn't that be incredible? Well, with no further ado, here are the pictures from this year's Pride Parade:
